1.1 SummaryFurnish and install decorative hollow polyurethane faux wood beams as indicated on the Drawings and as specified herein.
1.2 Quality AssuranceManufacturer to have minimum five years documented experience producing polyurethane architectural elements. Mock-ups required for projects exceeding 100 linear feet of beam.
1.3 SubmittalsShop drawings showing profile, dimensions, mounting method, and joinery. Finish samples minimum 12 inches long showing the actual production finish.
2.1 Acceptable ManufacturersProducts must meet the specified physical properties below regardless of manufacturer.
2.2 MaterialsClosed-cell polyurethane, density 240-320 kg/m³, three-sided hollow profile with uniform wall thickness 5-7mm. UV-stabilized integral color or applied stain.
2.3 FinishHand-applied multi-coat stain finish, color as selected from manufacturer's standard range. Custom color matching available with approved sample.
2.4 Fire RatingASTM E84 Class C standard. Class B available with intumescent topcoat specified.
3.1 ExaminationVerify substrate is capable of supporting mounting hardware and cleat system. Confirm dimensions in field before fabrication.
3.2 PreparationInstall continuous wood or metal cleat at locations shown on Drawings. Cleat to be shimmed level and shim points secured with mechanical fasteners into structural framing.
3.3 InstallationSlide beam profile over cleat system. Secure with corrosion-resistant trim screws through side walls into cleat at maximum 24 inches on center and within 6 inches of each end. Conceal screw heads with manufacturer-supplied color-matched filler.
3.4 Touch UpTouch up any field-trimmed ends or damaged areas with manufacturer-supplied repair materials matching the original finish.
Design Notes
The hollow profile is preferred where the design intent allows for surface-mounted electrical, where ceiling structure cannot support the weight of solid timber, or where shipping cost to the project site makes solid alternatives impractical. For applications requiring the beam to span between supports without intermediate mounting, consult manufacturer for reinforcement options.
