Walk through a recent project with me - a 4,200 square foot home in suburban Chicago where the homeowners wanted the warm character of exposed timber but had two specific constraints: the homeowner's severe allergies meant real wood was risky (mold spores in any unsealed grain could trigger reactions), and the ceiling structure was engineered trusses that couldn't handle the weight of solid timber. What I'd Do Differently

If I were doing this project again, I'd push the homeowner to consider a slightly more textured profile for the great room beam. The smooth finish we used looks elegant but under the homeowner's tall windows in afternoon light, the texture was less visible than it would have been with a more pronounced grain. The current result is sophisticated and subtle, which suits the homeowner's taste, but I think a slightly more rustic profile would have created more visual drama. There's no wrong answer - it's a question of how much texture the client wants to live with.

Specific Decisions Made

For the great room, we specified a single 22-foot continuous beam in the natural oak finish - a bold architectural statement without filling the ceiling with multiple beams. For the kitchen, two parallel beams in a slightly darker finish to anchor the island without competing with the range hood. The primary bedroom got one beam at the peak of the tray ceiling to draw the eye upward. The hallway leading to the bedrooms got three shorter beams at decreasing heights to create a sense of progression as you walk toward the private spaces.

Design Principles

Three principles guide my specifications for any project. First, the beam should relate to something else in the room - either picking up a tone from the floor, echoing a line from the architecture, or relating to a furniture piece in scale. Second, the proportion of beam to ceiling height matters - a 9-foot ceiling with a 10-inch beam feels crowded, but the same beam in a 12-foot ceiling feels graceful. Third, finish should be selected under the actual room lighting, not under showroom fluorescents. Beams that look perfect in the showroom can look completely different under the warm dimmer-controlled LEDs that most living rooms actually use in the evening.
